Description

Chopra et al identified a number of risk factors for a bloodstream infection associated with a peripherally-inserted central catheter (PICC). These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from a clinical intervention to reduce risk. The authors are from VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System and the University of Michigan Health System.

Patient selection: PICC

Reasons for insertion: long-term antibiotic therapy, venous access, total parenteral nutrition, and chemotherapy

Risk factors for bloodstream infection from multivariate analysis:

(1) number of catheter lumens (3 > 2 > 1)

(2) ICU status

(3) hospital length of stay (19.6 days +/- 17.7 with, 10.7 days +/- 11.4 without)
