Description

Chaboyer et al identified risk factors associated with adverse events in the hospital following discharge from the intensive care unit (ICU). These can help identify patients who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Griffith University and Gold Coast Hospital in Queensland, Australia.

Examples of adverse events following discharge from the ICU:

(1) infection (pneumonia, sepsis, etc)

(2) fall or other accidental injury

(3) acute myocardial infarction

(4) pulmonary embolism

(5) pulmonary edema

Risk factors identified on multivariate analysis:

(1) respiratory rate

(2) heart rate

number of risk factors =

= SUM(points for the risk factors)

Additional risk factors:

(1) high level of nursing care required (p = 0.06)

(2) hypoxia (oxygen saturation < 90%) (a risk factor for a major adverse event in univariate analysis)

Interpretation:

• minimum number of risk factors: 0

• maximum number of risk factors: 2 (from the multivariate model)

• The more risk factors present the greater the risk of an adverse event.
