Description

Aggarwal et al identified risk factors associated with mortality for patients with cirrhosis admitted to the medical intensive care unit (ICU). This can help identify those patients who may benefit from more aggressive therapy. The authors are from the Cleveland Clinic.


 

Independent predictors of mortality in the medical ICU:

(1) APACHE III score >= 90 (odds ratio 4.7)

(2) use of pressor agents (odds ratio 7.57)

(3) need for mechanical ventilation (odds ratio 4.57)

In addition, factors associated with an increased total length of stay included:

(1) mechanical ventilation

(2) acute renal failure

(3) bronchoscopy

(4) bacteremia

(6) transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt

(7) no CPR
