Description

Abdullah et al reviewed risk factors for a traveler acquiring a sexually transmitted disease (STDs). The authors are from the University of Hong Kong, the University of California in Los Angeles and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Risk factors for acquiring an STD:

(1) casual sexual contacts

(2) sexual partners with high numbers of separate contacts, including contact with a commercial sex worker

(3) lowered inhibitions

(4) use of a commercial sex worker

(5) needing to become an amateur sex worker for economic reasons

(6) low level of religiosity

(7) high levels of sexual activity prior to travel

Risk factors associated with decreased protection from STDS:

(1) unexpected or unanticipated sexual opportunities (no chance to make preparations)

(2) negative personal attitude towards safe sex practices

(3) intoxication

(4) low perceived risk of STDs, often associated with limited knowledge about them

(5) no or low societal expectations

(6) lack of availability
