Description

Ascaris can be transmitted from pigs to humans if certain risk factors are present.

Risk factors for transmission of Ascaris on a pig farm:

(1) Use of pig feces to fertilize crops.

(2) Growing vegetables near where pigs are penned.

(3) Poor hand hygiene practiced by farmers or anyone with pig contact.

(4) Failure to thoroughly wash produce after harvest.

Eradication of Ascaris from the pigs would be ideal but could be difficult if the number of pigs is large.
