(1) high rate of drug and alcohol abuse
(2) high rate of mental illness
(3) high rate of HIV, hepatitis C and other chronic infections
(4) high levels of violence and emotional stress
(5) pre-existing malnutrition
(6) high rate of homelessness when out of prison
(7) limited personal hygiene
