Description

Many people are injured or killed every year in snowmobile-related accidents. Most of these are associated with risk factors that are preventable.


 

Risk factors for serious injury when riding a snowmobile:

(1) intoxication with drugs and/or alcohol

(2) underage, untrained and/or inexperienced

(3) unsafe operation - reckless, careless or inattentive (racing, thrill seeking, tomfoolery, trying to jump an embankment)

(4) excessive speed for conditions, including the making of turns

(5) riding over ice unable to support weight

(6) riding in mountains under avalanche conditions

(7) riding in poor light conditions (pre-dawn or at dusk)

(8) mechanical problems

(9) riding up a steep incline (tipping over)

(10) running into a vehicle or other snowmobile while riding on a public roadway or on the wrong side of a trail

(11) running into a rock, tree or other fixed object

(12) not wearing a helmet
