Description

A male with multiple sclerosis (MS) may develop sexual dysfunction for a number of reasons. Identifying contributory factors can help in planning a management strategy.


 

Risk factors for sexual dysfunction in a male with MS:

(1) involvement of neural pathways affecting sexual functioning (neurogenic)

(2) low testosterone

(3) muscle weakness

(4) fatigue

(5) altered sensory experience including dysesthesia

(6) incontinence

(7) problems with concentration or attention

(8) depression and anxiety

(9) problems in the relationship with partner

(10) low self-esteem

(11) side effects of medications

(12) presence of an indwelling urinary catheter
