Description

Sewage will backup if inflow exceeds system capacity or if there is a block to flow.


 

Obstruction to flow:

(1) grease or fats poured down the drain

(2) disposable or cloth diapers

(3) tampons or sanitary napkins

(4) toys or balls

(5) roots from trees or shrubs

(6) pipe collapse

(7) rags or towels

(8) underwear, socks or other pieces of clothing

(9) paper products

(10) any other item flushed into a toilet

 

System overflow:

(1) flooding, especially if storm and sanitary sewage share the same conduits

(2) too many homes for the system's capacity

(3) pump failure

(4) illegal plumbing connections diverting storm water into sanitary sewer
