Description

Patients with peanut allergy may have a life-threatening reaction following exposure to even a minute amount of the allergen. Certain risk factors may increase the likelihood of a severe reaction occurring.


Risk factors for a severe reaction in peanut allergy:

(1) a history of a previous severe reaction

(2) current asthma

(3) misunderstanding the cause or potential seriousness of the allergy

(4) failure to control the preparation of food to ensure absence of all peanut products

(5) inability to recognize or respond to symptoms, including alerted consciousness or intoxication

(6) failure to administer epinephrine or other rescue drug promptly after the onset of symptoms, including failure to have such agents available
