Description

Certain urban patients are at an increased risk of experiencing multiple admissions for trauma. A person with traumatic injury and multiple risk factors may benefit from interventions to reduce future recurrences.

Types of traumatic injury:

(1) gunshot

(2) stabbing

(3) blunt trauma, including beatings

Risk factors for repeated traumatic injury in an urban population:

(1) minority (Black, Hispanic, other)

(2) male gender

(3) drug and/or alcohol misuse

(4) lower socioeconomic status, often unemployed

(5) involvement in drug dealing, gang and/or criminal activity

(6) failure to finish high school with lack of skills

(7) mental illness

(8) history of being in jail

The length of followup is important for recognizing a pattern.
