Description

A person firing a rifle may develop painful bruising over the shoulder against which the gunstock rests. This may be severe enough to prevent further use of the gun.

Risk factors for injury to the shoulder associated with firing a gun with a gunstock:

(1) high recoil associated with energy of the round

(2) high volume of fire (as with a machine gun)

(3) lack of shoulder padding (shooter's vest, etc)

(4) inexperience, and not holding the gun tight against the shoulder properly

(5) improper seating of the gunstock against the shoulder

(6) gunstock that is hard, unpadded, irregular or not designed to mitigate recoil

(7) bleeding disorder with easy bruisability

(8) improperly fit gun (arms too long or too short)
