Description

A patient with cystic fibrosis is at increased risk of osteoporosis and/or osteomalacia, especially if they survive into adulthood.


 

Risk factors for reduced bone strength in an adult with cystic fibrosis:

(1) chronic use of corticosteroids

(2) poor nutritional intake

(3) severe cystic fibrosis

(4) organ transplantation

(5) poor bone development during childhood

(6) chronic infection (associated with cytokines and increased bone resorption)

(7) gastrointestinal disease with diarrhea and/or malabsorption

(8) delayed puberty and reduced production of sex steroids

(9) low body mass index

(10) failure to monitor bone density

(11) reduced physical activity

(12) little exposure to sunlight
