Description

All-terrain vehicles (ATV) are associated with numerous injuries, especially in adolescents. While fun to ride, severe injury or death occur when safety is ignored.


 

Major types of injuries:

(1) fracture and other orthopedic injuries

(2) head and/or spinal injury

(3) skin abrasions and lacerations

 

Risk factors for injuries:

(1) driver <= 15 years of age

(2) being a passenger

(3) intoxication with drugs and/or alcohol

(4) excessive speed for terrain and/or when negotiating a turn

(5) riding on hillsides with excessive slope

(6) lack of proper training

(7) failure to wear a helmet and goggles

(8) environmental hazards such as low hanging tree branches

(9) riding recklessly and taking chances
