Description

A winch is used on a shrimp boat to manage the nets used for catching shrimp. Any body part that becomes entrapped during retrieval of a net can be damaged, sometimes severely.


 

Injuries that can occur in a shrimp winch:

(1) amputations

(2) open or closed fracture

(3) degloving

(4) crush

(5) overstretch injuries to joints and nerves

(6) arterial compression with distal ischemia

(7) rib fractures

(8) pneumothorax

 

Risk factors for injury:

(1) lack of a cover over the machinery of the winch

(2) getting too close to the winch while it is running

(3) wearing loose clothing

(4) getting entwined in netting, rope or cable during retrieval

(5) working alone

(6) unable to turn off the winch (unable to reach kill switch, malfunction, etc)

(7) trying to fix a malfunctioning winch

(8) fatigue

(9) intoxication

(10) being cold and wet

(11) heavy seas

(12) failure to secure a portable winch securely
