Description

A neonate may develop hypoglycemia during or after transfusion of a blood product.

Implicated products:

(1) packed red blood cells

(2) fresh frozen plasma (FFP)

Risk factors:

(1) premature infant

(2) only 1 peripheral vascular line available (so dextrose cannot be infused)

(3) use of a blood product anticoagulant/additive low in dextrose

(4) history of recent hypoglycemia

The blood glucose of a neonate should be monitored periodically (every 30 or 60 minutes) following blood product transfusion in order to detect any hypoglycemia.
