Driving a vehicle in windy conditions can be hazardous if certain risk factors are present.


 

Risk factors related to the winds:

(1) high wind speeds

(2) highly variable wind speeds (constantly changing in direction, intensity, timing)

 

Environmental risk factors:

(1) poor visibility due to dust, snow or other debris driven by the wind

(2) poor road conditions (slippery)

 

Risk factors related to the vehicle:

(1) large cross-sectional area exposed to the wind (tall and long)

(2) problems with steering

(3) light weight

(4) aerodynamic

 

Risk factors related to the driver:

(1) inexperience

(2) anxiety

(3) intoxication

(4) poor response time due to age, illness or medications
