Food insecurity may apply to an individual, a family or a community if certain risk factors are present.
Risk factors for food insecurity:
(1) poverty
(2) warfare
(3) physical and/or mental illness
(4) drug and/or alcohol abuse
(5) problems in food production and/or transport (prolonged drought, crop failure, etc)
(6) social isolation
(7) lack of adequate social programs in a society
(8) other breakdown in family or community
