Erectile dysfunction may result from a variety of factors which may interfere with proper vascular or neurologic function in the penis. Some are reversible while others may be permanent or progressive.
Conditions Associated with Erectile Dysfunction
Multi-factorial:
(1) aging
(2) smoking
(3) diabetes mellitus
(4) alcoholism
Penile disorders:
(1) priapism
(2) Peyronie's disease (induration of the corpora cavernosa)
Drugs:
(1) antihypertensive agents
(2) hormonal therapy
Vascular disease and risk factors for atherosclerosis:
(1) hypertension
(2) hyperlipidemia
(3) aortoiliac surgery
(4) coronary or peripheral vascular disease
Neurologic disease:
(1) spinal cord injury
(2) multiple sclerosis
(3) other neurological disorders (autonomic dysfunction, etc)
Trauma or surgery:
(1) blunt trauma to perineum or pelvis
(2) radical prostatectomy
(3) radical cystoprostatectomy
(4) proctocolectomy
(5) radiotherapy to the pelvic region (may be delayed)
