Description

Infusion through an intraosseous needle may be associated with a number of complications,


 

Risk factors for complications:

(1) failure to clean and prepare the site properly before inserting the needle

(2) inserting the needle entirely through the bone

(3) failure to immobilize the limb adequately, especially during transport

(4) needle dislodgment

(5) infusing a large volume of fluid in a short period of time

(6) infusion of an irritating solution

(7) prolonged use

(8) failure to monitor the child and the site adequately, especially in a high risk child

(9) making the dressing or straps too tight
