Description

A patient with epilepsy is at risk for thermal burns. Many of these occur in the home and most can be prevented.


 

Risk for epilepsy-related burns:

(1) frequent episodes with impaired consciousness

(2) failure to implement safety measures (like controlling water temperature in the hot water heater)

Safety Measures

cooking with a standard oven

use a microwave oven instead

handling hot items from a microwave oven

heat without boiling; handle with oven mitts

showering in hot water

limit highest water temperature

use of a hair dryer

use a low setting

ironing clothes

avoid ironing

smoking

stop smoking

exposed room heaters

use a protected room heater
