Description

Water buffalo are normally timid animals but they can gore humans with their horns under certain circumstances.

Risk factors for being gored by a water buffalo:

(1) assuming that the animal is harmless (careless)

(2) mistreating or provoking the animal

(3) crowding the animal (not leaving the animal alone)

(4) mishandling the animal

(5) intoxication

An animal that is sick may be more irritable and more easily provoked.

The risk can be reduced by dehorning the animal or covering the horns tips.
