Description

Entamoeba histolytica infections may be found more commonly in patients with one or more risk factors.


 

Risk factors for becoming infected:

(1) promiscuous male homosexuals

(2) heterosexuals with fecal oral contact

(3) communal living, if poor hygiene present

(4) institutional living, particularly mentally retarded

(5) immigrants from endemic area

(6) living in or traveling to an endemic area, when associated with crowding, no indoor plumbing and poor hygiene

(7) eating food prepared by an infected food handler with poor hygiene
