The piranha (Serrasalmus natterei) is a freshwater fish that inhabits rivers in South America. It is a carnivore with sharp teeth that attacks fish or mammals.
A single piranha is unlikely to pose much of a threat, whereas a large school of the fish may attack en masse.
Risk factors for attack:
(1) presence of blood in the water
(2) presence of thrashing or other commotion in the water
(3) warm water temperature
(4) presence of a large group of piranhas
