Description

An attack by a dog on a human may be associated with a number of risk factors. Identification of risk factors can help to identify strategies to reduce the risk.


 

Victim-related:

(1) child < 5 years of age

(2) male gender

(3) living in proximity to dogs (in household or in nearby neighbors)

 

Dog-related:

(1) male gender

(2) ill or in bad temper

(3) provoked (the person attacked need not be the provoker)

(4) history of human attacks or other aggressive behavior

 

Breed of dog:

(1) German shepherd

(2) bull terrier

(3) blue/red heeler

(4) Doberman

(5) Rottweiler

 

Background of dog

(1) guard dog

(2) trained by owner to be vicious

(3) wild

 

The absence of risk factors does not preclude attack.
