Some patients with ceramic-on-ceramic total hip replacements can develop a squeaky sound in the joint. McDonnell et al identified risk factors for reproducible joint squeaking. The authors are from Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford, England.
Patient selection: ceramic-on-ceramic hip prosthesis
Risk factors for persistent squeaking in the joint:
(1) greater range of motion
(2) greater ligament laxity
(3) smaller femoral head size
(4) decreased inclination of the acetabular component
Patients with a squeaky joint prosthesis were usually satisfied with the hip replacement.
