Description

A patient with light sensitive epilepsy may develop seizures while playing a video game.


 

Patient at risk: sensitivity to flickering lights or geometric patterns

 

Factors associated with increased risk for seizure while playing a video game:

(1) playing when tired or sleep deprived

(2) playing at certain times of the day or on certain days

(3) hyperventilation

(4) game features (bright lights, flicker rate, change in patterns, etc)

(5) history of seizures while watching television

 

Factors associated with decreased risk:

(1) treatment with valproic acid

 

A patient can have the EEG performed while playing a video game or watching flickering lights, looking for photoparoxysmal responses at certain flash frequencies.
