Description

A burn mass disaster occurs when a large number of people are severely burned. Although rare they can be devastating, with significant morbidity and mortality.


 

Scenarios of burn mass disasters:

(1) military operations

(2) terrorist attack

(3) industrial explosion

(4) fire onboard an airplane, ship, ferry, drilling platform or barge

(5) explosion of boilers in a confined space

(6) explosions involving fireworks or munitions (production, storage, use)

(7) volcanic eruptions

(8) explosion involving gas, gasoline or petrochemicals

(9) mass chemical burns

(10) fire in a high-rise building

(11) fire in a night club or music venue

(12) fire in a nursing home, sanitarium, hospital or prison

 

Risk factors associated with a burn mass disaster:

(1) presence of flammable buildings, furnishings, clothing, refuse and fuels

(2) lapses in fire safety measures

(3) a crowd of people in a confined space

(4) conditions where entrapment may develop (locked or blocked doors, limited exits)

(5) people are unaware of the dangers involved (which predisposes to panic, or intoxicated and incapable of being aware)

(6) inaccessibility of the site (may be physical or weather related)

(7) medical and emergency response services unable to respond or overwhelmed (unprepared or unable to respond due to weather or other factors)

(8) people incapable of escaping (comatose, paralyzed, restrained, locked in cells, etc.)
