Stamou et al identified risk factors associated with stroke occurring in patients after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Patients with 1 or more risk factors should be advised of the risk for stroke and be monitored more closely for this complication.

The risk of stroke increases with the number of risk factors present.
The presence of stroke resulted in:
(1) high short-term mortality (14%, or 5 fold greater than patients without stroke)
(2) longer post-operative stays (4 days longer than non-stroke)
