Description

A patulous eustachin tube may be associated with a number of risk factors.


 

Head and neck surgery:

(1) resection of nasopharyngeal cancer

(2) correction of a cleft palate

(3) percutaneous micro-compression for trigeminal neuralgia

 

Weight loss:

(1) following bariatric surgery

(2) anorexia nervosa

 

Medications:

(1) amantadine

(2) diuretics

 

Hormonal:

(1) pregnancy

(2) oral contraceptives

(3) other causes of increased levels of estrogens

 

CNS lesion that affects the function of the palatal muscles:

(1) stroke

(2) multiple sclerosis

(3) motor neuron disease

 

Other:

(1) conditions associated with elevated prostaglandins

(2) hemodialysis
