Description

It may be necessary to perform a second, directly observed specimen collection during a Department of Transportation (DOT) mandated urine specimen collection. This will result in two results which may be significantly different and which therefore may be confusing to an employer. The Medical Review Officer (MRO) should report the results in a way that reduces the chances for a misunderstanding.

Situations when an immediate directly observed collection is performed:

(1) temperature out of range

(2) evidence of specimen tampering

Possible results for each specimen:

(1) negative

(2) non-negative (any combination of adulterated, substituted and/or positive)
