Description

Rollover of a motor vehicle can result in serious injury to the occupants. Recognition of risk factors that can cause rollover and the injuries that occur during a rollover can help improve outcomes if a rollover should occur.

Prevention of rollover:

(1) Drive a vehicle with a high rollover resistance rating.

(2) Drive carefully on rural roads. Rural roads are more likely to have ditches or embankments that can help flip a car.

(3) Maintain tires properly.

(4) Load vehicles properly so that it is balanced.

(5) Avoid extreme panic-like steering.

(6) Avoid or be careful in adverse weather conditions (snow, ice, high winds, etc.) that can lead to a loss of control.

(7) Do not drive at speeds that are excessive for conditions.

(8) Do not drive when intoxicated with drugs or alcohol or when sleepy.

Prevention of injury during rollover:

(1) Always wear seat belts and place young children in car seats.

(2) Try to tie down or contain large, heavy or edged objects so that they cannot fly around.
