Description

Swine can catch and spread the influenza virus. The risk can be reduced by taking a number of steps.

Factors reducing the spread of influenza to or from pigs:

(1) vaccinate the pigs against influenza after maternally-acquired antibodies have declined (after 10-13 weeks)

(2) vaccinate the people who are around pigs against influenza

(3) avoid mixing pigs or people with sick pigs

(4) avoid mixing pigs or people with sick people

(5) proper handwashing with soap and water

(6) proper air handlng

Wearing a mask if sick or if in contact with sick pigs may help to reduce spread of droplets.

People at risk for contracting influenza from pigs:

(1) pig farmers

(2) people attending a petting zoo

(3) veterinarians

(4) abattoir workers

(5) pig transporters

There is no risk of influenza from eating properly cooked pork or pork products.
