Description

A pregnant woman is at increased risk for cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, which in turn can infect the fetus. CMV can be avoided by careful attention to hygiene. These recommendations have been made by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American College of Obstetrians and Gynecologists (ACOG).

The woman should

(1) wash her hands frequently with soap and water for at least 15 seconds.

(2) exert greater care:

(2a) when handling urine, saliva or potentially infected items such as diapers

(2b) when around infants or small children < 6 years old

(2c) when around a day care center

(2d) when in contact with an immunocompromised patient

(2e) during sexual activity

The woman should not:

(1) share food or drinks with young children

(2) share eating utensils with young children

(3) kiss children < 6 on the mouth or cheek

(4) put items handled by a young child into her mouth

Not mentioned was the risk of transmission by blood products. Irradiation or use of leukopoor products can reduce the risk by this route.
