The presence of readily accessible food, water and shelter within a building can attract rodents. Both food sources and possible shelters should be kept to a minimum.
Food sources:
(1) Keep food and water covered and stored in rodent-proof containers (thick plastic, glass or metal with tight-fitting lid).
(2) Wash dishes, pans and cooking utensils immediately after use.
(3) Keep pet food covered or stored in rodent-proof containers.
(4) Remove leftover food from cooking and eating areas.
(5) Clean up spilled food promptly.
Trash handling:
(1) Keep trash in rodent proof containers. The containers should be kept clean.
(2) Place empty aluminum cans or jars with food residues in rodent-proof trash containers, preferably outside of the house.
(3) Dispose of trash and garbage on frequent and regular basis.
Water sources:
(1) Keep water covered and stored in rodent-proof containers (thick plastic, glass or metal with tight-fitting lid).
(2) Repair water leaks.
(3) Insulate cold water pipes to prevent condensation from forming.
(4) Do not leave water for pets uncovered overnight.
(5) Do not leave basins of water open.
Possible shelter:
(1) Keep boxes, clothes, blankets or other items off of the floor.
(2) Minimize clutter.
(3) Cover gaps in the wall or about pipes with tight fitting screens, cement or metal sheaths. Areas to examine:
(3a) Kitchen cabinets
(3b) Stove or major appliances
(3c) Water pipes
(3d) Air or dryer vents
(3e) Hot water heaters or furnaces.
(3f) Pipes or wires entering the house.
