Description

The intake of calories and carbohydrates can be significantly reduced by using a sweetening agent as an alternative to dextrose or fructose.

Non-nutritive sweeteners include:

(1) acesulfame potassium

(2) aspartame

(3) neotame

(4) saccharin

(5) sucralose

Reduced-calorie sweeteners include the polyols (sugar alcohols):

(1) erythritol

(2) isomalt

(3) lactitol

(4) maltitol

(5) mannitol

(6) sorbitol

(7) xylitol

(8) tagatose

(9) hydrogenated starch hydrolysates

A large intake of polyols can result in an osmotic load, which can lead to diarrhea.
