Description

Turina et al reported risk factors for early, unplanned readmisson in patients who have had a rectal resection. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the Cleveland Clinic.

Reasons for readmission were most often:

(1) surgical site infection (SSI)

(2) dehydration

(3) anastomotic leak

Independent risk factors for readmission from multivariate analysis:

(1) prolonged surgery

(2) minimally invasive surgery

(3) inflammatory bowel disease
