Description

A patient who has received a solid organ transplant will benefit from a number of vaccines, especially if he or she travels.


 

Recommended immunizations:

(1) influenza, injected inactivated (annual)

(2) pneumococcal (initial with booster every 5 years)

(3) tetanus and diphtheria (TD)

(4) hepatitis A

(5) Typhim Vi

(6) inactivated polio

 

Immunizations which may or may not be indicated:

(1) hepatitis B

(2) meningococcal

(3) rabies

(4) Japenese encephalitis

 

Contraindications - presence of live virus:

(1) influenza vaccine with live virus (intranasal)

(2) MMR (measles, mumps, rubella)

(3) varicella

(4) Salmonella typhi Ty21a

(5) oral polio virus (OPV)

(6) Bacillus Calmette Guerin (BCG)

(7) yellow fever (YF)

 

Live viral vaccines may be a hazard to the patient if administered to family members or close contacts.
