Description

Buvat and Lemaire evaluated men with erectile dysfunction. They identified men who should have their serum testosterone and/or prolactin measured. The authors are from Lille, France.


 

Indications for measuring serum testosterone:

(1) age > 50 years

(2) low sexual desire

(3) abnormal physical examination suggesting low testosterone

 

Indications for measuring serum prolactin:

(1) low sexual desire

(2) gynecomastia

(3) serum testosterone < 4 ng/mL

 

Additional reasons measuring serum prolactin might include:

(1) presence of a pituitary adenoma

(2) therapy with a drug with a high risk for causing hyperprolactinemia
