Description

Riding an escalator can be hazardous if certain precautions are not observed.


 

Hazards when riding an escalator:

(1) short falls, with trauma from the edge of stair

(2) falls for a distance down the escalator

(3) clothing caught in the escalator mechanism

 

Recommendations:

(1) Hold small children by the hand.

(2) Do not push, shove or play on the escalator.

(3) Do not run.

(4) Do not sit on the step.

(5) Make sure shoe laces are tied.

(6) Make sure pant bottoms do not drag on the ground.

(7) Hold onto the rail with one hand.

(8) Stand to the right and walk on the left.

(9) Be careful when the stairs are slick from water, oil, or soap.

(10) Avoid riding the escalator while intoxicated.

(11) Do not carry awkward packages or children that may affect balance.

 

Outdoor escalators may have a greater chance of being slippery from rain, sleet, wet leaves or other environmental sources.
