A person traveling in the tropics should take several steps to avoid heat exhaustion.


 

Recommendations to reduce sun exposure:

(1) Avoid spending long periods of time exposed to the sun, especially when the sun is at its zenith.

(2) Keep your head covered during the day with a broad brim hat or umbrella.

(3) Travel at night whenever possible.

(4) Avoid traveling in open, unroofed vehicles (buses, etc.)

 

Recommendations to ensure replenishment of fluids and salt:

(1) Drink large amounts of fluids throughout the day.

(2) Keep a canteen of fluid with you at all times.

(3) Make sure you have an adequate intake of salt.

 

Recommendations for clothing:

(1) Avoid dark-colored clothing if directly exposed to the sun.

(2) Wear loose fitting clothes that encourages sweat evaporation.
