Description

Someone with an antisocial personality may be a pathologic liar. Many listeners may believe what they are told by this person, often to their later regret.

Reasons people may believe a pathologic liar:

(1) The liar is charismatic, confident and likeable.

(2) The liar promises something to the listener that the listener really wants.

(3) The listener believes that the liar is a friend AND the listener cannot accept that the liar would harm a friend.

(4) If confronted the liar may EITHER be absolutely calm and unruffled OR become extremely defensive and angry.

(5) The listener is not familiar with the liar AND the listener has not yet been badly harmed.

(6) The liar is adept at manipulating the listener.
