Description

The concentration of vitamin A in serum or plasma is affected by a number of variables.

False vitamin A levels may occur with:

(1) recent alcohol intake (may falsely increase or decrease levels)

(2) oral contraceptives

(3) exposure to sunlight

(4) exposure to plastic tubing or rubber materials

(5) failure to process properly (with freezing right after collection)

(6) recent ingestion of tomatoes or other foods containing phytofluenes (if a fluorometric assay used and no attempts were made to remove the compounds)

(7) acute inflammation (acute phase reaction)
