Description

Raynaud’s phenomonen can affect a woman’s nipples.


 

Clinical findings:

(1) The patient experiences extreme nipple pain, often described as throbbing.

(2) The nipple initially shows pallor followed by redness then bluish coloration (triphasic color change).

(3) The symptoms may be triggered by cold environemental temperatures.

(4) Other explanations for nipple pain are excluded.

(5) Prompt relief with nifedipine (a calcium channel blocker).

 

A woman with Raynaud’s phenomenon of the nipple may not be able to breastfeed because of the pain.
