Description

Whelan et al developed the Radiographic Union Score for Tibial Fractures (RUST). This can be used to evaluate healing of a tibial fracture following intramedullary fixation. The authors are from the University of Toronto, St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, and McMaster Health Sciences Centre in Hamilton.

Cortices evaluated:

(1) anterior

(2) posterior

(3) medial

(4) lateral

Each cortex is scored from 1 to 3.

RUST =

= SUM(points for each cortex)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 4

• maximum score: 12

• The higher the score the greater the fracture healing.
