Description

Poddubnyy and Sieper listed risk factors for radiographic progression in patients with ankylosing spondylitis and axial spondyloarthritis. Progression of disease results in reduced spinal mobility and a decline in functional status. The authors are from Charite Universitatsmedizin in Berlin.

Patient selection: ankylosing spondylitis (AS) or axial spondyloarthritis (SpA)

Outcome: radiographic progression

Risk factors for radiographic progression:

(1) syndesmophytes at baseline

(2) elevated acute phase reactants - erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and/or C-reactive protein (CRP)

(3) smoking

Non -radiographic progession of axial spondyloarthritis to ankylosing spondylitis is predicted by an elevated CRP.
