Description

In some cultures dog meat is considered a delicacy. Unfortunately it can also be a source of rabies.

Risk factors for rabies in a person who handles or eats dog meat:

(1) use of stray dogs

(2) failure to vaccinate dogs against rabies

(3) smuggling or illegal dog trading

(4) being bitten or scratched

(5) handling fresh tissue with bare hands

(6) eating undercooked dog parts

(7) not being vaccinated against rabies

In developed countries the practice may be kept secret and not disclosed.
