Knaust et al identified 3 questions that can be used to screen for a surgical site infection (SSI) following hospital discharge. The authors are from University of Giessen, University Hospital Leipzig and Joint Research Centre at Ispra, Italy.
Patient selection: post-operative following hospital discharge
Screening questions:
(1) pain at surgical site
(2) swelling at the surgical site
(3) diagnosis of a surgical site infection by a physician
A patient with one or more of these findings should undergo additional testing to identify or exclude SSI.
