Description

Patients who have received pelvic radiation for prostate cancer may later develop urinary bladder problems. Franklin et al developed a patient questionnaire to determine how severely these affect the patient. This was developed in Queensland, Australia.

The instrument consists of 6 questions:

(1) frequency of urination during the day

(2) frequency of urination at night

(3) blood in urine

(4) urgency

(5) pain on urination

(6) effect of radiotherapy on bladder function

The first 5 questions have responses scored from 0 (normal) to 4 (severe). The sixth question had responses scored from 0 to 3.

bladder symptom score =

= SUM(points for the 6 questions)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 23

• The higher the score, the greater the bladder morbidity.
