Description

Kolotkin et al evaluated factors affecting the quality of life in obese patients. The items related to sexual life can be applied to any patient with a physical disability. The authors are from Duke University and the University of North Carolina.


 

Sexual life items:

(1) not feeling sexually attractive

(2) lack of sexual desire

(3) not wanting to be seen undressed

(4) difficulty with sexual performance

(5) avoidance of sexual encounters

(6) lack of enjoyment in sexual activity

 

Additional items (from Social and Interpersonal. Mobility, and Self-Esteem categories):

(7) fear of intimacy

(8) fear of being rejected

(9) feel clumsy and awkward

(10) urinary incontinence (during sexual activity)

where:

• The original items are scored from 1 to 5 with responses never true, rarely true, sometimes true, often true, always true.

= SUM(points for all 10 items)

 

Interpretation:

• minimal score: 0

• maximum score: 30

• The higher the score the more distress and/or discomfort is felt by the patient.
